Together Again

Stuart, now in his 30's, was living a relatively good life. He graduated from Oxford with good marks and went on to become a tax lawyer. Everything worked out except for his marriage. With the divorce finally behind him, Stuart found himself wondering what had become of the American girl he once fell in love with.

He laid on his bed with his hands behind his head, staring at the ceiling. Images of Guinevere flashed through his mind and he found himself smiling. He still missed her.

"I'll definitely come see you. We've so much catching up to do."

He took the card, looking at it before putting it safely in his pocket.

"One thing I learned in school is that there's greatness in all of us. Some of us just need a little extra push."

"Or some reason not to run."

She smiled at him. If not for him she knew she'd have gone back to the States as soon as she was able. He'd kept her there and her whole world had changed.

"So how are things here? The city doesn't look too much different than I remember it," she said. "And you look even better than I remember you. You've gotten even more handsome with age."

Stuart had never felt something so strongly as the urge to tell her how he felt. To tell her to stay. He didn't want to imagine how his life would've turned out without Guinevere.

"Things are definitely better. I've learned to love this place," he nodded. "You've gotten even more beautiful, if possible."

[aimlesswonder]

"I was really happy when work took me here. The first thing I said to myself was I should track you down," she replied. "Thankfully I've gotten good at that kind of thing after a decade working for the government!"

She smiled. "How busy are you the next couple of days? Once I finish these interviews, maybe we could catch up? Visit some of the old places we used to hang out?" Presuming they still existed.

"You could call it fate."

Stuart only needed to think for a moment. "Not really busy. I could easily make some time for you. A trip down memory lane sounds fun."

[aimlesswonder]

"You'll have to show me around. Again," she corrected with a laugh. "I don't know what's still here and what's changed or what isn't here anymore. This is the first time I've been back since we went off to college together."

She held his eyes for a moment blushing faintly. The idea of inviting him back to her room after dinner was starting to cross her mind, but she worried it might be too forward. She was a lot less blunt as an adult.

"So are you seeing anyone these days?" she asked. Small steps.

"I'd be happy to, Guin. Things are mostly the same.. Some museums are abandoned old buildings now, moved to bigger locations."

He met her gaze, wondering if she thought the same thing he did. The night shouldn't end after they leave the restaurant. It's been 10 years since he saw her and the old feelings were sparked.

"No. I've been on my own after the divorce.. Keeping busy with work and stuff like that. What about you?"

[aimlesswonder]

"Me neither. This job requires a lot of driving from place to place, and so it's hard finding someone who can deal with my erratic schedule. And I just haven't really tried that much."

She chuckled.

"Maybe you ruined me for other men."

[crossinglines]

"You may have done the same for me. I could never really forget you, Guin."

He smiled at her, reaching for her hand again.

"What do you say we continued the night? I'm in no hurry to go anywhere."

[aimlesswonder]

"I'd like that."

She squeezed his hand and looked down shyly.

"To be honest, I've wanted to kiss you for the last twenty minutes."

"That's what I've been thinking about, too. I miss your lips on mine."

He kissed the back of her hand, eyes fixed on her.

"We should go back to your room after this."

[aimlesswonder]

It was an intriguing proposition and one she didn't hesitate in accepting. She didn't want to say goodbye just yet after an entire decade apart.

"I'd like that," she said. Even if all they did was talk like they used to it sounded like exactly what she wanted. A chance to reconnect with someone she cared about and had missed greatly. Someone she had never stopped loving, even though their lives had forced them apart.

"Great," he smiled. It'll be nostalgic spending time with her again, talking and kissing like in their teenage years. She really didn't look that different from those days either.

"It's really good to see you again. It feels like everything's perfect again."

[aimlesswonder]

"Well, I think I learned more manners than I had back then," she said with a laugh. "And I'm not running around threatening to stab people with swords."

The military certainly did a good job refining her. She had been looking for that kind of direction. Which was what made it the best choice for her career, as much as she hated the fact that it prompted them to break up.

She finished with dinner, signed the check and left a sizeable tip for the waitstaff. One thing that hadn't changed was her black card.

"Shall we?"

"That can be said for both of us. I'm not quite so rebellious and stubborn anymore."

Stuart could never forget about Guin and her sword. The sword that was in a special place on his wall now.

"We shall. Let's go catch up like in the old days."

He linked his fingers with hers and lead her out of the restaurant and to her room.

She smiled, letting him lead until they were at her door. Reaching into her purse with her free hand for the room key, and letting him inside. "What did you want to know?" she asked, though what she wanted to do at that moment was kiss him and see if the chemistry between them was still there.

The one thing Stuart wanted to know was if they still had the chemistry. He tugged her closer and cupped her cheek as he leaned in, lips pressing against hers. It felt right.

He was still as bold as she remembered him being. She kissed him back, groaning softly at the feel of it as she knocked the door shut behind them with her elbow. It brought all kinds of memories rushing back to her. Except this time she wouldn't be trying to get handsy with him. She would let him decide how far he wanted to go.

The kiss brought back all those feelings he kept hidden for years. He wrapped his arms around her, smiling against her lips.

"Let's not have life pull us apart again, Guin."

[aimlesswonder]

"What are you saying to me, Stuart?"

She smiled at him knowing his comment could be interpreted many ways. It was obvious neither one of them wanted to lose touch again, but they could stay in touch purely as old friends or...did he want to rekindle their past relationship? She hoped so, but wasn't going to assume one kiss meant he was in love with her again. That was the kind of cocky thing her teenage self would have presumed.

"I'm saying.. Let's give it another go. See if we still have that spark."

He had never really fallen out of love with her, so it'd be easy reviving what they had. Starting all over again.

[aimlesswonder]

Her smile grew at his words. She had missed him, and she was glad that he still thought of her as fondly as she did of him. She nodded slightly, knowing it would be similar yet different ten years later.

"I'd like that," she said. "If you could put up with all the trouble I got into back then, hopefully you can put up with me now!"

Of course, hopefully then she wouldn't be boring to him compared to all the fun and excitement they had when they were kids.

"I'll be more than happy to, Guin. I never stopped being in love with you."

They've both changed from their teenage years, so it'll be interesting seeing how well they fit together now.

"This feels like one of those romantic movies. A boy and girl separated for years. Then one day they meet again and the love is still there."

[aimlesswonder]

"It kind of does. You watch a lot of romantic movies, Stuart?"

She teased gently as they walked over to sit on her couch. She kicked off her heels, glad to have them out of the way.

"I missed you too. I always hated that we had to break up. I kind of had this idea of us getting a flat and starting a life together, but...you were happy here and I did not want to uproot your life. It was easier for me to leave."

It was always easier for her to leave.

"I've seen a few," he admitted. She'd see right through him if he tried to bluff anyway.

He got comfortable on the couch, resting his head on Guinevere's shoulder.

"It wasn't an easy decision.. I cried that night, which is rare. I really liked you but your life took you on a different path. And here we are now.. Starting over."
